Easy South Indian Traditional Breakfasts
Whenever we consider South India, we can not but mention food. Especially breakfast! Since soft idlis to crispy dosas, South Indian breakfast is adored in not only in India but all over the world. The best part? Lot of these dishes are healthy and filling and can be made within a short time.
Sometimes one cannot even spend an hour in the kitchen in the contemporary busy life. That is why I chose to create this list of easy South Indian traditional breakfasts which you can prepare within 20 minutes. These are very easy and domestic recipes that suit anyone- a new cook or a working parent.
1. Kuzhi paniyaram(Tamil Nadu)
These little things are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and are prepared on a paniyaram pan.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups idli/dosa batter
- 1 onion (finely chopped)
- 2 green chillies (chopped)
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- curry leaves
- Oil
Preparation:
- Add oil to a pan, mustard seeds,curry leaves, onion and chillies. cook till golden.
- Add the cooked stuff into the batter and mix.
- Take some oil on paniyaram pan, put the mixed batter in it.
- Cook until brown on both side.
- Then served with coconut chutney.
2. Appam with coconut milk(Kerala)
Light and lace, appam goes well with coconut milk or stew.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups raw rice
- ½ cup grated coconut
- 1 tsp sugar
- ½ tsp yeast
- Salt
Preparation:
- Soak rice for 4 hours and grind with coconut
- Add yeast, sugar and leave it overnight
- Put the batter into appam pan, spread for thin edges, and cook.
- serve with coconut milk or vegetable stew.
3. Thatte Idli (Karnataka)
These flat, super-soft idlis are steamed in plates instead of small moulds.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups idli rice
- 1 cup urad dal
- Salt
Preparation:
- soak rice and urad dal separately for 4-6 hours.
- Then grind to smooth batter, ferment overnight.
- Put the batter into the steal plates and steam for 10 - 15 minutes.
- serve with sambar and chutney.
4. Neer Dosa (Karnataka)
Light soft dosa without fermentation.
Ingredients:
- Rice – 1 cup (soaked)
- Salt
Preparation:
- Grind soaked rice with water in to thin batter.
- Add salt into the batter.
- Heat tawa, spread batter in form of thin dosa.
- Cook on one side only.
- Serve with chutney or veg curry.
5. Kambu Koozh (Pearl Millet Porridge -Tamil Nadu)
A filling and cooling farmer’s breakfast.
Ingredients:
- Kambu (pearl millet) flour – ½ cup
- Water – 2 cups
- Buttermilk – 1 cup
- Salt
Preparation
- Cook kambu flour in boiling water to make soft.
- Let it cool, then mash.
- Mix with buttermilk and salt.
- Serve with green chilli, pickle or raw onion.
